Immunoassay interference

Immunoassay technology, pioneered by Yalow and Berson more than 60 years ago, has had an enormous impact on modern medicine, both in medical research and clinical management of patients. The early methods were labor intensive and time-consuming, typically relying on incubations spanning days, but modern immunoassays are often fully automated on multi-analysers and provide results in minutes. Immunoassays can deliver reliable and rapid information at low cost, but the technology is vulnerable to interference through several mechanisms, which may produce false results and lead to patient harm unless discovered and managed appropriately.
