Telomere length – a marker of aging in humans, with focus on cardiovascular aging and disease

The shortening of telomeres, cellular senescence, epigenetic modifications, and mitochondrial dysfunction are key molecular mechanisms of ageing. The integrity of genetic stability is fundamental for cellular functions in which telomeres play a crucial role. The present article will focus on mechanisms influencing telomere maintenance and attrition, telomere length in cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and potential interventions that may preserve telomeres and delay the onset of age-related diseases.
